Program length ranges from 6 weeks for a basic PV installation certificate to 12 months for a comprehensive program including full electrical training and NABCEP prep. Most students complete their primary certification in 6 months, many while continuing to work part-time.
No prior experience is required for entry-level programs. Basic math skills and comfort with physical, outdoor work are helpful. Many students come from unrelated fields — retail, food service, administration — and do extremely well. Programs are designed to take you from zero to job-ready.
NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) is the solar industry's gold-standard credential. While not required for entry-level roles, NABCEP certification typically commands a 20–30% salary premium and is required for senior installer, lead technician, and system design positions. Most good programs include prep for the NABCEP PV Associate exam.
Entry-level installers typically earn $18–$22/hour. With 2–3 years of experience and NABCEP certification, lead installer roles pay $25–$35/hour. Senior technicians, system designers, and project managers earn $65,000–$90,000+ annually. The field also bridges into electrical contracting and broader energy management roles.
